I. Class Description: 6th grade students will be reading a variety of novels and short stories (both fiction and non-fiction) throughout the school year. They will also be studying a variety of literary elements and will be using them in their daily reading.
II. Class Materials: The students will be using a Literature textbook. In addition, throughout the school year, the students will be reading a variety of novels. If a student needs to check out a novel or Literature book overnight, that is fine, but he/she will need to check the book out with the teacher and return the book before 1st period the next morning. Everyday each student is required to bring their AR book/free read book to class.
III. Class Outcomes: My hope is for all 6th grade students to be proficient and/or advanced in the 6th grade reading standards that the state of South Dakota has set forth.
1. Each student is required to accumulate 15 Accelerated Reader Points each nine weeks. The points will be due before the end of the nine week period. Dates are subject to change. Students can check point values of each book with Mrs. Lewison. After completing an AR book, each student will then take an on-line quiz over the book.
2. Each student will be required to create one Literature Report each nine weeks. The report can be over any book they have read on their own over that nine week period. The reports will be due two weeks before the end of the nine week period. If the student finishes his/her report early, it can be handed in at any time. Each student is to follow the requirements for the report that Mrs. Lewison will hand out to them.
OR The student may choose to accumulate an additional 15 AR points to cover the Book Report.
3. The students will also be given daily assignments. I expect the assignments to be completed when they come to class the next day, unless otherwise assigned.
4. Periodically the students will be given quizzes, which will be both announced and unannounced.
5. Students will also be assessed over materials that we read in class.
6. Throughout the school year students will be completing projects that will be announced in class. The majority of the projects that will be completed in this class will be done in a group. I expect each and everyone to do his/her part within the group. Due dates for all projects will be given in class.
V. Expectations:
1. Students show respect towards each other and myself (other teachers).
2. Complete all assignments on time; late assignments will result in Homework Study Hall –please reference student handbook.
3. Be organized; students are required to use their assignment book for reading class!
4. Be willing to work with others.
5. Cheating WILL NOT be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero on the assignment.
6. Everyone is here to learn, any classroom disruptions will result in a penalty. See student handbook for clarification.
